Fully claustral or not: how your queen founds a colony
Most queens found after a nuptial flight are fully claustral: she seals herself into a chamber and raises the first workers on her own flight muscles and fat, taking no food from outside. Semi-claustral queens have to forage while they do it, and a socially parasitic queen cannot found alone at all.
Do I need to feed a founding queen ant?
Usually not, if she is fully claustral, which covers most of the common species people find after a flight. She raises the first workers on her own flight muscles and stored fat. Semi-claustral queens are the exception and do have to be fed through founding.

Australian bull ants (Myrmecia) hunt their way through founding, some American seed harvesters such as Pogonomyrmex californicus do too, and Myrmica rubra, the red ant that flies in Britain from August into September, is usually listed as semi-claustral.

She may be socially parasitic. Lasius umbratus in Europe, and the American citronella ants such as Lasius murphyi, found by entering an established colony of another ant and having its workers rear the brood. Alone in a test tube there is no route to a first worker, however well she is kept.

No. Lasius niger is fully claustral and Lasius umbratus is a social parasite; both queens are 8 to 9 mm and both are on the wing in late summer. North America has the same problem with Lasius neoniger and the citronella ants that parasitise it. You need the species, not the genus.

A forecast describes a box of air, not your garden. The models behind most forecasts work in boxes 1 to 11 km / 0.6 to 7 miles across. A summer shower narrower than that gets averaged across the whole box, so the rain lands on you and not on the forecast.
Why is the weather forecast different from my thermometer?
A forecast is not a measurement of where you are standing. It is a model's best guess at the average state of a box of air a few miles across, and your garden is one spot inside that box. A sheltered sunny corner runs warmer than its own box on most afternoons.

It varies by model. The service this app takes its weather from picks the finest model covering your location, and those run from about 1 to 11 km / 0.6 to 7 miles across. ERA5, the reconstruction everyone leans on for past weather, works in boxes of about 31 km / 19 miles, which is wider than most cities.

Because a summer shower is often smaller than the box the forecast describes. Global models work in boxes around 9 to 11 km / 5.6 to 7 miles wide, and rain falling on a fraction of that gets averaged across all of it. A downpour on one estate comes out as a light sprinkle everywhere.

More than anything else at that scale. Air cools by roughly 5 to 10 °C / 9 to 18 °F for every kilometre / 3,300 feet you go up, and in hilly ground one forecast box can hold that much height between its lowest and highest point.

Because each one now gets its own weather reading. They used to share one reading between several neighbours, which made a patch of the map look uniform when the ground underneath it was anything but.

No public weather model reaches it. A wall, a tarmac drive or a shaded damp lawn all work at scales of metres / feet. That difference is real, it matters a lot to ants, and it will always sit outside what a forecast can see.

Britain's season does not end with the July black garden ant swarms. The red ants (Myrmica) run into September, the parasitic yellow Lasius fly from mid August, the thief ant Solenopsis fugax flies on warm September and October afternoons, and Stenamma debile is later still. These flights are small and quiet, which is why people miss them.
Do flying ants only come out in July?
No. The black garden ant, Lasius niger, flies from early July to about mid August, and because it is by far the most abundant British species its swarms are what people notice. Other British species fly on through August and September, and a few reach October.

Partly abundance and partly biology. Lasius niger is the commonest ant in most British gardens, so its flights are the largest by sheer numbers. The later species are less numerous, several of them are tiny, and they fly in short local bursts rather than in one synchronised swarm.

Put her somewhere dark, warm and undisturbed, and then leave her alone. Most founding queens seal themselves in and raise their first workers on their own body reserves, so they need no food. Resist checking on her. The commonest way a new keeper loses a queen is by disturbing her, not by underfeeding her.
What do I do with a queen ant I just caught?
Put her in a small dark container somewhere warm and quiet, and leave her undisturbed. Most common founding queens do not need feeding while they raise their first brood, because they live on the muscle and fat left over from the flight.

You mostly don't, until she lays. A queen found walking with her wings already shed is a good sign, because shedding usually follows mating, but it is not proof. If several weeks pass with no eggs at all, an unmated queen is the likely explanation.

A team flew a drone-mounted adhesive trap through nuptial flights and caught queens and males of four species between 15 and 120 metres up, most of them between 60 and 110. The surprise is that the smaller species flew highest, and wind speed had no measurable effect on altitude.

Separately, altitude loggers fitted to insect-eating birds in Oklahoma recorded ants up to around 160 metres. Both studies used small samples and few species, so treat these as a first sketch rather than settled figures.

The opposite, and two independent studies agree. Wing surface area had a significant negative effect on capture altitude in the drone study, and maximum altitude fell by 60% from the lightest species to the heaviest in the Oklahoma bird study. The exception is species whose queens mate on the ground rather than in the air, which stay low whatever their size.

Yes. Alates are roughly raindrop-sized and reflect the beam in much the same way, so a dense enough swarm reads as a band of light rain until a forecaster cross-checks it against rain gauges and finds nothing falling on the ground.

Height does two jobs. It mixes queens and males from different colonies, which is the entire point of flying at all, and it hands the queen to the wind so she comes down somewhere other than on top of her mother's nest.

Heavily. Gulls and starlings work a swarm at low level where you can watch them do it, and swifts take aerial insects much higher up. Flying ants turn up in swift diet samples often enough that researchers have used them to date nuptial flights.

Ant colonies do not coordinate across a neighbourhood. Each nest flies when its own conditions line up, and those differ between two gardens on the same street: nest depth, shade, soil warmth, and whether the colony is even old enough to make winged ants at all. Neighbouring nests flying a fortnight apart is normal.
Why did flying ants swarm next door but not in my garden?
Because the two nests are not reading the same conditions. Soil warmth, shade, nest depth and the age of the colony all differ across a few metres, and a nest under warm paving reaches flight conditions hours or weeks before one under a shaded lawn.

No. Colonies of the same species tend to fly in the same sort of weather, which is why swarms often cluster, but the citizen-science survey work found no meaningful geographical coordination. Neighbouring gardens routinely fly a fortnight apart and both are normal.

Unlikely. A colony has to be several years old and reach a certain size before it makes winged ants at all, so a young nest is present and simply not reproducing yet. Flights also run for only a few hours, so yours may have happened while you were out.

There was no single Flying Ant Day in the UK in 2026. Winged ants flew in waves from 21 June, and swarms reached Met Office radar on 8 July, well before the 20 to 29 July windows forecasters named. The Royal Society of Biology has recorded flying ants on 96% of days from June to September.
When was Flying Ant Day 2026 in the UK?
There wasn't one. Winged ants were reported from 21 June, again in force around 5 July, and swarms showed on Met Office weather radar on 8 July. The widely quoted windows of 20 to 25 and 24 to 29 July arrived after a large share of the queens had already flown.

After a nuptial flight, look on the ground, not in the air. The mated queens have already landed and shed their wings. Check warm paving, path edges, and the base of walls for a few hours after a swarm. A queen is bigger than a worker, often wingless, and usually walking alone.

Ant nuptial flights are spread across the entire day, not clustered at noon. Veromessor and Cyphomyrmex fly at first light, Forelius near midday, Pogonomyrmex in the mid-afternoon, Aphaenogaster just before sunset, Camponotus after dark, and Atta texana in the small hours before dawn.
What time of day do flying ants come out?
It depends on the genus, and the spread is enormous. Some fly in the first hour of daylight, some in mid-afternoon, some at dusk, a few in the middle of the night. There's no single hour that covers ants in general.

Barometric pressure does not predict ant nuptial flights. In the largest UK dataset (Hart et al. 2018, 13,394 records), temperature and wind speed were both strongly associated with flight days, while pressure was not significant at all (chi-square 0.2, P = 0.687). Dealate does not use pressure as an input.
Does barometric pressure trigger ant nuptial flights?

Flying ants indoors in summer are almost always a nuptial flight: winged queens and males leaving a nest outdoors to mate, pulled in through windows by the light. They can't damage your home, they don't need pest control, and they're usually gone within a few hours.

No. They're the same garden ants you see all summer, with wings for a few hours during their mating flight. They can nip if you handle them, but they aren't aggressive and they can't damage the building.
